ONSRA California Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

ONSRA California Electric Skateboard FAQ'S

If you are new to electric skateboarding check out our list of  10 Things to Consider When Buying An Electric Skateboard.

How old do I have to be to use an ONSRA electric skateboard?

This electric skateboard is a high performance vehicle and should not be used or operated in any way by children or teenagers under the age of 18 years.

How do I control an electric skateboard?

The board acceleration is controlled by a Bluetooth remote control using a thumb throttle push button. To turn you use your body weight as you would a normal longboard or skateboard.

How can I brake?

To slow down you pull the throttle knob backwards on the handheld remote control. The brake is firm when applied at medium to fast speeds. The braking is softer at slow speeds and may not bring you to a complete stop at once. It has been designed to be as safe as possible.

Are ONSRA Boards okay for beginners?

ONSRA boards are high performance electric skateboards designed for efficient transportation and having fun while riding them. Their high speed and quick acceleration put them well beyond the "toy" or "hobby" category, they are not designed “for” beginners. However, the remote is set up with three performance modes. Mode "1" is perfect for beginners as it reduces the acceleration and top speed. Modes "2" and "3" offer stepping-stones as you improve your skills and confidence.

How do the speed modes work?

Our remote control has three speed modes - ECO, MEDIUM & PRO.

ONSRA spent a lot of time refining each of these modes to perfectly match the mode selected and offer smooth consistent throttle control. While there are a lot of differences, the most noticeable effect of each mode will be the torque. As a percentage, a rough guide to these is as follows:

ECO mode will offer around 20% of available power, with a limited top speed – perfect to learn for beginners.

MEDIUM mode offers around 80% of available power, with more speed but limited to be ideal for cruising and achieving maximum range.

PRO mode offers 100% of available power and the full top speed.

WARNING: MEDIUM and PRO mode offer performance capabilities not suitable for beginners and allows the rider to get in situations that may increase risk in operation. Riders must understand the power this board can offer, there are rules that must be respected for safe use. We recommend full protective gear at all times when riding an Onsra Electric Skateboard.

Can I use the ONSRA Remote with all ONSRA models?

To offer high level performance, we designed the Onsra Black Carve electric skateboard from the ground up. The design is with easy functionality compatible with all components in the Black Carve series. You can pair the remote with other models as any new compatible remote - for example with the ONSRA Challenger (released in 2021).

Should I wear a helmet? What’s the best helmet for an electric skateboard?

Helmets are not optional. The best helmet is one that you wear consistently - any commercially sold high-quality helmet made for electric skateboarding is good. You can choose from various styles and fits, but again the best one is one that you will wear every time you ride.

Professional helmets are required for a skateboard with this level of speed and performance. The better question to ask is, "Do I wear a full face helmet or not?" Helmets are not an option or “style” accessory.

Do you recommend additional protective gear?

Wrist guards are also highly recommended, as well as elbow pads and knee pads.

How fast can I go on the ONSRA electric skateboard?

A lot of factors ultimately control speed. Weather conditions, surface conditions, battery charge level, riding style, rider profile and - significantly - the board setup. The ONSRA Black Carve series is available with a range of wheel options, as well as additional gearing options. A smaller wheel or bigger gear will offer more torque, whereas a bigger wheel or smaller gear will increase top speed. A rough guide for what to expect can be gauged in the following table, referencing gear options and some available wheel sizes.

How can I get the best range from my electric skateboard?

PRO mode was  designed specifically for this purpose, and all our advertised ranges and testing were conducted in this mode. Averaging 12mph with gentle throttle control usage and not exceeding speed much is the key. Our tests were carried out in mostly flat conditions, with an 175 lb rider, and weight will affect this range somewhat with reference to this. Ensuring proper charging and board maintenance will also give the best opportunity for a long ride!

Is the ONSRA Black Carve electric skateboard waterproof?

In testing, the board held up quite well to instances of water (gutter run-off, sprinkler plash). However due to the greater issue that comes with wet conditions – slippery surfaces – we have decided not to state waterproofing a priority feature in our design. A greater priority to ONSRA is safe use of our boards. With the high power available from the board, combined with slippery conditions, our testing showed high potential for involuntary safety risks using electric skateboards in wet conditions. For this reason, we strongly advise against use in any wet environments (including wet roads, riding while it rains, riding on snow etc.).

Please note, damage to the components as a result of moisture exposure is not considered a manufacturer defect, and is not covered under warranty.

What skate wheels can I use with the ONSRA Black Carve?

Basically, any wheel in the market, from 85mm in the dual belt up to 180mm and 97mm in the direct drive up to 130mm.

Our current favorite is our own ONSRA Street option wheels. We took the best bits of our favorite wheels and mashed them together for a wheel perfect for our electric skateboard! But if black isn’t your color, we still have a large selection to choose from! We have drive gears for the Orangatang Caguama wheels, and gears that work with the CloudWheels 120D hubs. These wheels come in quite a few variations so there are sure to be a set perfect for you!

We also have plans to expand options, so stay tuned for future developments!

Can I use other AT Wheels on the ONSRA Direct Drive?

No, we haven’t produced any adapter for matching any AT wheel on a direct drive model due to the high speed result which is unsafe for the rider in our opinion.

Can I use other AT Wheels on the ONSRA Dual Belt AT?

We designed the 6”/150mm Onsra AT wheels to be long lasting, high grip all terrain wheels. They are the perfect complement to the Onsra Dual Belt AT. We have tested 7’’/175mm & even Knobby 8” tires on our hubs with success. Similar tires may work, we advise checking for wheel bite before any use with unmentioned tires on our list.

In short, few tire sizes will fit on the ONSRA hubs, but we have not designed a new drive gear yet other than what we offer. The 7” tire will offer more torque and better off track torque, at the expense of top speed. 3 mph drop in speed has been seen in testing.

Can I upgrade my current ONSRA Dual Belt to the new Onsra AT setup and performance?

As the AT is an all new option kit we offer, you are able to upgrade previous owned dual belt model Onsra boards to this setup. Both the electronics and physical design are the same, just need to swap a complete AT kit to change your street wheel version to an AT version.

How fast does the ONSRA Black electric skateboard go?

This varies depending on the rider's weight, terrain and slope. On a good flat road the black carve series with street wheel setup can reach speeds of 32-35 mph.  However the boards are not about speed more so about carving, coasting and cruising.

Can I ride the board up hills?

Yes. The boards inclines of up to 30% gradient, in other words INSANELY STEEP for the ONSRA Black Carve models.  Riding on hills can be very dangerous, what goes up must come down! For example, if you ride up a very steep hill and you intend to ride down the same hill, it can be extremely dangerous and you must know how to control your speed without the use of the electric brakes if ever there was a malfunction or there was a situation where the brakes fail.

How long will the battery last and how long does it take to recharge?

ONSRA Black Carve current (2020) battery -  up to 26 mile range and 3-4 hour recharge time

These specs are tested on fairly flat ground with a few small inclines. Battery life depends on factors such as weight of rider, terrain, inclines and also the way the rider uses the throttle. On the AT boards, battery range can vary if PSI levels get below 40PSI.

How many charges will I get out of my battery?

Approximately 1000 full recharges.

Battery maintenance is an important matter for your ONSRA electric skateboards. Good maintenance improves the longevity and performance-over-time of your ONSRA skateboard. These guidelines are just guides, not set-in-stone rules. Sometimes you can't follow all of them, but the more you do, the longer your battery will last. Onsra uses very high quality battery cells which are more forgiving than others. These guidelines are also helpful for any device that uses Lithium batteries, like your phone or tablet.

  • Don't store your skateboard with an empty battery
  • Don't store your skateboard for more than 7 days with a full battery
  • If you aren't going to ride your skateboard within ~7 days, store your battery at 60%
  • If you store your skateboard for several months, check it each month and maintain a 60% charge
  • Don't ride your skateboard until the battery is completely empty
  • When your battery is low (<20%), let it cool and then charge it to full (or 60% for long storage)
  • Don't charge your skateboard until it is at 20% or below.
  • The idea behind this last guideline is to avoid charge cycles. The more times you charge your skateboard, the quicker your battery will degrade. Onsra skateboards have a very long range and depending on your riding needs, it may not be best to charge after every ride. 20% to 80% charge is the sweet spot for Lithium based batteries. Spending much time below 20% or over 80% will not help the longevity of your battery.
  • Don't leave your board connected to the wall outlet after it is fully charged.

Is there any warranty?

Yes there is a 1 year warranty.  For more info please see our ONSRA California Warranty page.

Which wheels can I use on my board?

Basically any wheels in the market, just take in mind the wheels core - either Abec or Kegel. The wheels have to match the correct Abec Pulley or Kegel Pulley. We have two drive gears compatible with our direct drive model using the correct adapter (Abec or Kegel core) to match the wheel core you choose that can be used with a variety of top shelf wheels.

We'll be making more gear options that are compatible with other wheels in the future but at this stage you can use the wheels below.  Check out the ONSRA Street Wheel Adapter Guide - Direct Drive Board only and the ONSRA Pulley Guide - Black Carve Dual Belt only as well as the All Terrain (AT) Wheel Guide  and the Electric Skateboard Wheel Guide

  • Loaded Orangatang Caguama 85mm wheels minimum size for Dual Belt model - not for use on Direct Drive model due to low ground clearance
  • Abec 11 -  97mm, & 107mm Flywheels
  • Any 6"/150x50mm  AT tires fitted on ONSRA Hubs.
  • Any 7"/175x50mm  AT tires fitted on ONSRA Hubs.

MBS RS11 hubs and 8" tires can be fitted if you match the Pulley and Belts as well, on your own. Just keep in mind that due to the size they might cause your motors to heat more than usual due high torque especially at high speed or high torque demands. And you might need to take off your motor pulley plastic cap or add spacers when installing 7’’ or 8’’ tires to avoid tire bite.

How do I maintain my ONSRA board?

Maintaining your ONSRA board is very simple. None of the electrical or mechanical parts need to be serviced. Just routinely check that screws and nuts are tight, bearings are clean and rolling freely, rotate your wheels and keep your board clean.

Can I do tricks on an ONSRA board?

You can slide on the board but be careful that you don’t abuse the board in a way that will void your warranty or do anything dangerous.  Please refer to our Warranty page for more info.

What are the differences between the two Black Carve boards?

There are too many differences between the boards to answer this easily. The best way for you to compare ONSRA boards is to look on our Which ONSRA board should I buy? Comparison guide.

What is the maximum weight of ONSRA riders?

The limit we suggest is 265lbs. Over this weight the board will lose some torque as well as range, and it will put strain on the electronic and mechanical components. We do not recommend it for riders over 265lbs.

Can I kick push home if I run out of batteries?

Yes, the board has little resistance which enables it to roll when the power is off. While it’s super easy with on the Direct Drive Board, there is more resistance when using the Dual Belt version, due to belt friction.

How often will I need to replace the drive belt?

We use the highest quality drive belts available on the market, they are very efficient, quiet and durable. The belts should last a very long time and generally become better with age. If ever the belt does break due to wear and tear, replacing it takes a few minutes and they are available on our website.

How do you swap between the All Terrain setup and the street setup?

The board can be converted between setups within approximately 5 minutes.  You can watch the conversion video here >>>

Can the All Terrain models ride over sand, rocks and long grass?

No, the board has not been designed for pure “off road” riding but can be used on any compact or hard surface.
